Who are you?
My name is Callum Hays, A.K.A ‘Lurch’

What is it you do?
I’m a Techno DJ / Producer / Live act from Newcastle Upon Tyne. I also help run an independent, local record label (Kaneda Records)

How long have you been doing it?
I started out producing electronic music when I was about 16 years old, but generally got into producing Techno during my first year of university (about 9 years ago). I met a few talented dj’s and music producers through studying music tech, who definitely helped expand my knowledge of different genres within electronic dance music. Once I started getting down to techno nights, I was hooked!

What inspires you?
As cliche as it sounds, my love of the sweaty dance floor. That real feeling of unity and acceptance when you’re bobbing about, raving to some massive kick, that’s blazing a hole in your eardrum. I guess the freedom of expression and the intensity of the harder side of techno has always driven me to try and write tracks that match that energy.

When it comes to composing, collaborating with other techno producers is definitely another massive inspiration for me. There are so many talented producers around the North-East, I always find it fascinating just seeing what other people are doing with their compositions and how I can apply that to my own music production techniques.

Tell us about your work.
Currently, I have a brand spanking new single coming to Kaneda Records on the 30/04/21. I’ve really empathised with so many musicians and djs throughout this lockdown and I really wanted to write something that reflected just how difficult a lot of us have found life after the closure of our beloved nightclubs and the lack of financial support they’ve received during these challenging times. The track titled ‘Just Days without you’ got its name from the powerful vocal line I stumbled across on my day-to-day sample forage and I just felt it was rather apt, given the current circumstances.

With this description, it almost feels as if I’m describing some sort of love ballad, which really isn’t the case. I wanted this track to be as raw and jaw rattling as possible, taking influence from industrial and acid inspired rave tracks.

What have you got coming up in the future?
Hopefully some gigs! I had a fair bit booked up before the start of lockdown, which was a bit of a gutter, as it all got cancelled. Currently looking to reprise one of the shows we had to postpone during the first lockdown with local act ‘Onism’, so expect details on that in the near future, via the Kaneda records website ( Other than that, I’m working on plenty of tracks, collaborations and remixes. So keep your eyes peeled!

Where can people find out more about you?
