Reliably informed

Having swapped the sunshine of California for the delights of Newcastle, singer-songwriter Hekla Goodman has charmed North East fans of folky pop. Her new EP due later this year promises more of her emotive songwriting, evidenced by new single I Choose You which is released on 5th April. Catch Hekla live at The Cluny 2, Newcastle on Saturday 30th March. Here, we find out all we can about the artist…

Who are you and where are you from?

I’m Hekla Goodman, and I’m a singer-songwriter from California, currently in the North East because I love the Geordie charm.

What is it you do?

I play acoustic guitar, and have somehow developed my own brand of pop, electronic, folk music that normally tells of my heart dealings and introspections.

How long have you been doing it?

I started writing music in my teenage years, and my love for songwriting developed from there. I grew up in the church so I was always singing and playing the acoustic guitar. Though I don’t come from a musical family, we often had something eclectic playing in the background, from Fleetwood Mac to Queen and everything in between. I’ll always be thankful for the music they introduced me to.

I’ve been gigging around since my early twenties and started taking music properly serious when I joined my old band KHASMA. The guys were based in Switzerland and I was in London at the time, so it made recording and releasing quite an interesting time. But we had fun. Then I eventually decided to venture out on my own. I think I was finally writing a lot of personal music that were stories that only I could tell, because I lived them. Last year I released my first EP which was awesome and thrilling at the same time! I played my first Cluny gig…and now I’m back with a sophomore EP! I can’t wait to play these songs live.

What inspires you?

The people in my life inspire me the most. Love, heartbreak, getting my life together. Those are the tales I tell really. I think everyone can connect to what’s real, what’s true, because we’re all living in parallel. So I tell it as it is, with a little melody.

Tell us about your music

Well, since I’m American, you’ll probably always hear a little bit of that in my voice, and I grew up in a small town that was quite country. My mom is also Icelandic, so on both sides of the coin I was destined to turn out a bit folky. But my music is some version of pop, electro, folk. I think I’m finally settled at that, and happy with it. Many people give away influences, but you wouldn’t necessarily get very far with that. Some days I love Griff, others I just want to listen to Novo Amor, the next I’ll be vibing to Teddy Swims.

What have you got coming up in the future?

I’ve got a gig coming up! I’m playing a show at The Cluny on Saturday 30th March. I’d love anyone and everyone to come, so it’s going to be ‘pay as you feel’. But this is also a chance to showcase my upcoming EP called Forward, of which from it my single I Choose You will be dropping on 5th April. I really hope you come, and I can’t wait to meet you.

Where can people find out more about you?
