Reliably informed

Folk and country-tinged artist Emma Robson releases her new single Back To You, a duet with pal and fellow North East songwriter Elizabeth Liddle, on 19th April. Here, we find out all we can about the musician…

Who are you and where are you from?

My name is Emma Robson and I grew up in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

What is it you do?
I’m primarily a vocalist who acquired some guitar skills along the way.

How long have you been doing it?
Music has always been something I’ve had around. No musical skill in the main household however, but lots of love for music at least. My first guitar was a hideous bright pink, but I never really touched it (most likely in protest of the colour). Then I got a keyboard and started writing songs on that as a teenager before finally finding my way back to the pink guitar and deciding, in my first year of college, to splash out on a more neutral coloured one. I think when I got that guitar I started writing music that I really loved and I am very strict about only writing on that guitar now. So I have been writing music since the age of thirteen, but writing GOOD music since the age of eighteen (I like to think so at least).

What inspires you?
Everything I experience/everything around me in all honesty. Growing up it was literature that I wrote about but that was before I had really left the house and actually experienced anything. Artist inspirations would be Joni Mitchell, Maggie Rogers, Taylor Swift and Flyte. Joni in particular has such a way with melodies that sticks with me always.

Tell us about your music
All my songs start with me and my guitar, usually at 3am. Genre wise they always go back to my love for pop but I like to think you can hear hints of country/folk in the instrumentation. The words have always come first for me, probably because lyrics are my favourite thing in music. I have always loved that I can write something so incredibly unique to me, that could then mean something completely different to someone else. People finding parts of themselves in my writing is very important to me.

What have you got coming up in the future?
I have been recording some new music that I plan to release over this year! My newest single is Back To You which features the wonderful Elizabeth Liddle, released 19th April. It is a song about friendship so I am really glad to have one of my closest friends feature on it.

Where can people find out more about you?
I am chronically online so you can find me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and Threads as @emmarobsonmusic
