We find out all we can about the electronic duo from Gateshead ahead of the release of their new single, The Rain
Who are you and where are you from?
We’re Jake and Andy, A.K.A Drive. We’re both from Gateshead.
What is it you do?
We write, record and perform our own music.
How long have you been doing it?
We’ve known and worked with each other for a number of years but our latest work as Drive is still a relatively new project. Our debut single ‘Old Cassette Tape’ only came out in July of last year.
What inspires you?
We take a lot of our inspiration from John Hughes movies and the music in those films. We also love anything on film; Super 8, Polaroids and VHS tapes – they’re all part of the world we want to create.
Tell us about your music.
We make music that makes you feel like you’re in a coming of age movie. We’re really influenced by music from the 80s – think The Blue Nile and Prefab Sprout, and then more modern bands like Bleachers, Arcade Fire, The Killers – that kind of thing.
What have you got coming up in the future?
Our new single ‘The Rain’ is released on October 1st, we’re really excited to share it as it’s the first proper track we sat down and wrote together as Drive. It’s about the feeling you have in your twenties where you don’t really know yourself, where you stand or where you should be going. It’s self-produced but we worked with Calum Malcolm who did The Blue Nile and Prefab Sprout’s records we mentioned. After this release, we’re hoping to put out one more single to round off the year whilst we finish recording our debut E.P which should be ready for an early 2022 release!
