Who are you?
Ben McQueeney or “Queeney,” for anyone who knows me in the CrossFit Community!

What is it you do?
Now that’s a question! I have played drums in local northeast bands such as Whalter, The 15 Minutes Society and briefly in The Chapman Family. I have turned my hand to writing recently and I have just written my first novel “The Spirit of Things,” which is a young adult coming of age fantasy.

How long have you been doing it?
I have been writing for about three years now. I started by writing cool fan-fictions of awesome video game franchises such as Fable and Final Fantasy but took the plunge and decided to create my own world a couple of years ago.

What inspires you?
Lots of stuff! Great books, TV and movies, music and epic video games. I think to narrow it down basically I love a story that captures your imagination. Those are the best. The ones that take you on a journey and you are utterly devastated when they end. That could be anything from a Netflix series to a 250,000 word epic fantasy novel!

Tell us about your work.
My first book “The Spirit of Things” is a coming of age fantasy. It’s about a human brought up by elves. Except in my world, humans are not liked by the other races. So my main character has to put up with a lot of ridicule. There’s also lashings of magic, three-headed lizards the size of elephants, gods that act like toddlers, a mysterious curse that turns people into beasts and a bowtie wearing werewolf called Gary.  I like to think of my work as the lovechild of Patrick Rothfuss and Terry Pratchett. Aha! Below is what people have been saying about the book.

“…for Tolkien and Harry Potter Fans.” (Shawna B, Amazon US review)
“Like an Updated Sword of Shannara meets The Name of the Wind.” (Melissa Rose Rogers, Amazon US review)
“A Unique and Fun Fantasy Story.” (K F Barr, Amazon US review)
“…an author with limitless imagination and potential!” (John Dearlove, Amazon UK review)
“A fun YA novel full of heart and with a created sport that tops Quidditch.” (Bookends & Bagends, Amazon UK review)

What have you got coming up in the future?
I am writing the sequel to the first book. I can reveal the name as “The Whisper of Fire”. Hopefully it should be out towards the end of the year.
