Over the past twelve months, our magazine and website have been brimming with super-talented, creative souls. We’ve asked a few of them to tell us about their 2020 and offer a few tips about great stuff they’ve seen, watched and read.

Here, highly revered Middlesbrough rapper Eyeconic tells us about his 2020…

Sum up 2020 in three words

Adapt to environment

What skills did you learn in lockdown?

I learned how to manoeuvre the socials and how to be more present online. Not being able to perform or make any public appearances has forced me to figure out how to use social media to my advantage as an artist. I also picked up piano and that’s something I really enjoyed. I’ve always wanted to learn how to play an instrument and lockdown has allowed me to dedicate time to it.

Your favourite band/artist of the year?

It’s a tie between ZELA and Shakk

Your favourite song of the year?

Once a Day by Mac Miller is my favourite song. His posthumous Circles album helped me get through lockdown.

Favourite TV Show of the year?

The final season of Bojack Horseman is some of the best TV I have ever watched. The way they approach mental health was very careful and sensitive but at the same time it was very hard hitting. The second to last episode contains one of my favourite poems of all time. The writers of the show has managed to wrap up every character arc perfectly and brought the story to an end in true Bojack fashion.

Best book you’ve read?

I’ve took a deep dive into Virginia Woolf’s literary collection this year. Mrs Dalloway being my favourite book out of her works. The constant changes in perspective is very cinematic.

Venue you looking forward to performing?

I look forward to performing in Base Camp in Middlesbrough! I can’t wait for my friend Sully to set up another GAST! Drum & Bass rave and have me host it.

What was your favourite gig/live stream?

I got the chance to perform at Base Camp when the socially-distanced gigs were taking place. I love making the crowd a part of my performances, I decided to count out a 4×4 beat and designated a different beat to different tables. One of the tables clapped on the third beat and another table slapped their tables creating a ‘kick’ noise on the first beat. While that was happening I rapped over the beat they played.

Any upcoming artists we should keep an eye out for in 2021?

Two artists I’m really looking forward to hearing more from is Phibi and P Mann.

Predictions for 2021

I don’t have any predictions but I hope the world goes back to a state that we consider more normal. I miss the way the world was and I’m a bit upset I took it for granted.

Anything in the pipeline for next year? *

I’m going to record one or two more music videos for songs off my recent album DNR and then continue releasing new singles!
