Reliably informed

Hartlepool singer-songwriter Michael Gallagher releases his third single Call My Name via Humble Angel Records. The track is an anthemic indie offering complete with staccato verses, soaring choruses and a lo-fi nonchalance in the vocal delivery, which when paired with the sharp lead guitar gives a The Cribs-esque ambience. In contrast to his previous release Lula which was a celebration of young love, Call My Name is a song about the breakdown of a relationship from the perspective of both sides.

Here, with lockdown lift and beer gardens opening, Michael tells us about his top five pubs…

5. The Park Inn – Coming in at number 5 is The Park Inn, known to the older generation as ‘The Park Hotel’. One of the only places left in the town where you can get 4 pints and still have change from a tenner. With them great prices comes a great atmosphere where hours tick by like minutes.

4. The Pot House – Situated on Hartlepool’s historic Headland, The Pot House serves up a brilliant pint which can be enjoyed looking out to sea on a sunny day or by the fireside when things are a bit more grey & gloomy. Locals seem to have a peculiar fascination with those who choose to wear white socks.

3. Raby Arms – Taking home the bronze medal is The Raby Arms. Serving up one of the best pints in the town, pulled expertly by none other than Mr William Jake Hamilton (Bass Player). Perfect place to spend your full Sunday watching the football, if you are that way inclined. Also, free roasties and Yorkshire puds in the bar after 7pm, pre-covid.

2. Idols – The only bar on the list that is open past 12am, Idols is Hartlepool’s one and only Indie Bar. Great tunes and great craic. This is where I played my first ever headline show and the owner John has been plying me with free shots most weekends since! He was also kind enough to let us use the venue to film the music video for my latest single ‘Call My Name’

1. The Jacksons Arms – Taking the number one spot is The Jacksons Arms. A little pub in the centre of the town which serves the best pint of Guinness outside of Ireland. On a Saturday night the pool room could be mistaken for The Crucible and the jukebox, which always has credit, is the cherry on top! Proper pub.

Honourable Mentions
The Royal (Back) – Karaoke & Chaos
Hartlepool Supporters Club – Great pint. Great people.
King John’s Tavern – Heartbeat of Hartlepool’s nightlife.
