Damian Robinson enjoys a sell out show of upbeat indie pop from a couple of masterful bands

It’s main support act The Rosadocs who kick us into Friday night spirits tonight thanks to their bouncy, poppy blend of indie pop. Taking clear inspiration from the first two albums of fellow Sheffield band the Arctic Monkeys, The Rosadocs put up a great set as they glide over short pop tunes with a solid, visible confidence. No.54 and Concrete stand out in a set of upbeat, confident indie.
Headliners The Lilacs play to a sold out Cluny; the Wigan gang crack straight into sing-along tunes Where’ve You Been Hiding and By All Means, setting an early standard both of musicianship as well as culture; they’re here not for anything other than creating upbeat, sing-along, indie pop. And they do that in fine style.
Given the sing-along to set highlight That’s Not Me, The Lilacs delivered on their mission objectives tonight; play fast, play loud, get others involved and create as much enjoyment as possible. There’s a reason why bands like this sell out venues like the Cluny. Excellent.
