On Saturday the 8th of November, a one-day film festival is coming to Sunderland Minster. Hosted by Sunderland Film Club, and supported by Sunderland Culture, the festival titled ‘The Weird and the Eerie’ explores the realm of horror films. It is a place where the uncanny meets the unsettling, and the world of boundary-pushing movies dwell.
Inspired by the late cultural theorist Mark Fisher’s seminal book of the same name, the festival brings together local filmmakers who craft horror movies which sit in all corners of the genre. Screenings begin in the late afternoon and continue into the evening, featuring standout titles such as: We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, Lake Mungo (followed by a live performance by local experimentalist Feral Yon) and culminating with the intense Kill List in the darkness of night.
Whether you’re a horror fanatic, enjoy the occasional jump scare, or are simply curious about unsettling cinema, this immersive day promises an eerie atmosphere for all involved, and a chance to experience films that defy easy categorisation within the genre. With accessible seating, subtitled screenings, and a bar on site, it’s an event which anyone can enjoy. But beware… the strange will have a way of sticking around long after the credits roll.
