Youth Rising in the UK 1981-2021 is currently exhibiting at Newcastle’s Side Gallery until Sunday 3rd October 2021. It explores the work of nine award-winning photographers who have documented young people in the UK over the past 40 years. It features work by Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen and Chris Killip shown alongside recent work by Alys Tomlinson, Maryam Wahid, Sadie Catt, Tom Sussex,  Christopher Nunn, Paul Alexander Knox and Vanessa Winship.

There’s also a chance to see work by students and graduates from University of Sunderland’s BA (Hons) Photography, Video and Digital Imaging and MA Photography courses as well as graduates from the University of the West of England, Bristol all of whom have captured various aspects of life from their perspective over past two years.

Budding photographers are also being asked to respond to the exhibition by posting their own images on Instagram along with the hashtag #YRU?. AmberSide co-director Laura Laffler explains more…

“Photographs are a critical platform through which young people can be seen, heard and  remembered. We’re encouraging visitors to share original images which explore the themes  of our new exhibition and document life as a young person growing up in the UK. Poignant,  funny or candid we’re excited to see what audiences have to share.”

Admission to Youth Rising in the UK 1981-2021 is free, however pre-booking is recommended. To do that head to their website.
