The Unthanks and Maximo Park emerged around the same time and went on to become two of the most successful acts from the North East in recent years. And while Rachel Unthank and Paul Smith from Maximo Park seem to come from different musical spheres, their collaboration felt inevitable somehow, and it’s no massive surprise to find out that their debut album Nowhere & Everywhere is very special indeed.

Unthank has always shown an interest in lots of music outside the folk milieu and Smith is clearly into everything! The album is a sparse, often beautifully solemn affair driven by their wonderful harmonies and Smith’s fine guitar (assisted by other local luminaries like David Brewis and Tyneside’s most tireless collaborator, Faye MacCalman) and it’s going to be a treat to see how the songs are presented live. People in the North East get two chances to find out as their current UK tour hits Newcastle Wylam Brewery on 2nd April and Sunderland Fire Station on 8th April.

Unthank : Smith perform at Wylam Brewery, Newcastle on Sunday 2nd April and Fire Station, Sunderland on Saturday 8th April.
