The Wayfaring Cinema sets off on its first tour of the English Northeast this September
The Wayfaring Cinema rolls into the North East this September, offering a new model for outdoor film exhibition that’s local, low-impact and community-led. Touring Durham, Newcastle, Bishop Auckland and the Lake District from Saturday 20th to Wednesday 24th September, the mobile cinema will host screenings in public spaces, pairing artist-led films with food, fire and conversation.
Built from reused materials and powered by solar-charged batteries, the cinema is the work of a collective including Andrea Luka Zimmerman, Christo Wallers, and Liam and Vanessa Scully. Zimmerman’s new feature Wayfaring Stranger leads the programme, joined by Gypsyland from Turner Prize nominee Delaine Le Bas and Realities Checked by writer and broadcaster Damian Le Bas. Together, the films explore themes of movement, marginalisation and rural security, with a focus on Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.
Screenings take place at Abundant Earth, Durham (Saturday 20 September); Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle (Sunday 21 September); Auckland Palace, Bishop Auckland (Monday 22 September); and Dodgson Wood, Lake Coniston (Tuesday 23 September) — with each event designed to bring people together in open-air settings. The project is supported by Good Cave Projects and Borderlands, and aims to test a new format for inclusive, sustainable cinema in harder-to-reach places.
