Duets hold a special place in the pantheon of music. The democracy of sharing a song with another in equal measure is first and foremost a selfless act, a beautiful sort of artistic compromise, and I’m sure one thing we can all agree on is that the world could do with a few more of those at the minute.

So then, as always, thank the Lord for Paul Smith. The prince of the North East alternative scene has once again gathered a band of merry men and women to stage (another) one-off celebration of the duet; ranging from folk song to blockbuster pop hits. Smith hosted the first of these shows at Middlesbrough Town Hall in September in front of a sell-out crowd, so the chance to see it again at Sage Gateshead on Thursday 19th December is a pre-Christmas treat not be passed up.

Curated by the Maximo Park frontman, guests include Rachel Unthank, Kathryn Williams, Mara Carlyle and The Futureheads’ Ross Millard; each bringing their own inimitable styles and all backed up by Mercury nominated Sunderland pop heroes Field Music. Expect to hear everything from Kate Bush to Aretha Franklin and George Michael, maybe even Dean Martin. Though, naturally, I’ll have my fingers crossed for Robbie and Nicole…
