BBC Newcastle comedy radio show takes over Newcastle Labour Club on Thursday 28th February. The Grin Up North live show features sketch comedy from the Grin Up North All Stars doing a 30 minute live sketch show and stand-up from Louise Young, Anja Atkinson and Si Beckwith.

Set to be a showcase for some of the North East’s talented comedy writers and performers the show has supported this funny bunch well over the last six months.

It all started in Summer 2018 with a mission to mine for gold – Grin Up North was launched. A combination of writing workshops, live shows and a weekly radio show has seen the station broadcast comedy talent from the Tees to the Wear to the Tyne.

Grin Up North, the radio show is presented by Steffen Peddie and produced by Steve Drayton, both who are well versed in the world of comedy.

Steve is the lead producer of Grin Up North, and has been delighted by the wealth of talent to be found across the region. He described the process of getting new voices on air:

‘We decided to adopt a very DIY punk rock method. The aim of every writing session is to have material ready to be recorded and on air within a couple of weeks. It’s important for writers and performers to hear their work on a programme broadcast by the BBC. It gives them a chance to reassess what they’ve done. We have a self-selected core group of writers and performers with sessions for new writers providing access to all. It’s a brilliant scheme. I can quiet often be found at my desk, editing sketches and laughing. That’s a good way to work that is. We’re going for a 30 minute live sketch show with sound effects and  music – the whole shebang. It’s risky, but if anyone can do it, The Grin Up North All Stars can’.

Steffen is very excited about the show – ‘It’s a great opportunity to help bring new people into the tradition of strong funny radio sketch shows. Our first gig at the Customs House was a blockbuster. This new show promises even more block and buster’.

The Grin Up North Live Show is at Newcastle Labour Club on Thursday 28th February. A limited amount of free tickets are available via grinupnorth@bbc.co.uk.
