Gein’s Family Giftshop by Drew Forsyth

If dark and quirky comedy tickles your ribs, Gein’s Family Giftshop are most definitely for you. The Salford-based quartet (although they perform as a threesome) have gained some seriously impressive plaudits for their bizarre sketch comedy. Nominated for Best Newcomer in the Foster’s Comedy Awards in 2014 and winning Best Newcomer at the Chortle Awards in 2015, the group’s idiosyncratic skits will win over fans of surreal humour.

For a wee taster of GFG’s often twisted brand of humour, check out their handful of sketches online; the anticipatory weirdness of Unboxing (below), where Kath Hughes savours the opening of an iPhone box only to reveal a kidney, lovingly packaged by a dead boy’s parents; the gore inferred Missing Dog, with its awkward pauses and wonderfully surprising ending; or the wonderfully silly-turned-apocalyptically scary Clouds.

With scripts that are both taut and wonderfully weird, it’s no wonder Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton invited them to appear on off-kilter TV anthology Inside Number 9, and the group share much of their edgy and sinister style with the League of Gentlemen writers.

Local promoters Hilarity Bites bring the troupe to Darlington’s Seen on Wednesday 20th April, where the full glory of their Trophy Collection show will be on garish display. Don’t miss it.
