Listening to music can very often be an immersive experience under the right conditions and with just the right record put on to spin. But it’s always a bit of a push to call listening to music a truly participatory experience, save for a bit of a sing along and a dance at a gig. Tim Shaw and Sebastian Piquernal have come together for a new collaboration, Field, which attempts to help the audience join in more with the experience of sound diffusion.

With Fields, audience members are encouraged to join in with the action by simply connecting their mobile phone, laptop or tablet to a specific website. From there, the interconnected devices become an array of speakers that the performers themselves can control live, resulting in an immersive and omni-directional aural experience. Enhancing this experience is the lack of a stage, allowing the performers to mingle amongst the audience and abolish boundaries between the two.

Amongst the grand setting of Durham Castle, the sounds and sonic pathways should reverberate around the old walls and fill the room with an echoed, beautiful ambience not heard from the project before.

Fields comes to Durham Castle on Thursday 23rd April.
