Newcastle’s Head of Steam brings some experimental sounds to town on Saturday 28th September in the form of protest rockers CATALAN! It’s the latest project from Ewen Friers, whose previous project Axis Of are currently lying dormant, enabling Ewen the physical and creative freedom to pursue his own musical identity. Having released debut single OKA, accompanied by the most intentionally annoying music video you could ever imagine, and a handful of singles since, he’s taking his new material across the country.

Ewen’s music is inherently political, treading a fine line between songwriting and poetry. Footage of CATALAN! reciting a spoken word piece entitled Home in Belfast last year is genuinely gripping, and the social commentary buried within is current and uncomfortable. It’s a trope which is sadly lacking in British musical discourse, with only Sleaford Mods daring to do anything remotely similar on a national stage. 2018’s Cornelius and Espionage offer perhaps the best examples of his powerful vocals, giving his emotive lyrics the ideal platform. Having had time to regroup and re-energise since taking a break from Axis Of, Ewen described his new endeavour as “being “built around the words, hence why it’s named after a language.”

Support comes from local rockers Hakara and Blyth alt. rock maestros Hollow Legs.
