The dynamic duo of Simeon Soden and Chris Maltby made for a delightful addition to the local circuit last year as their latest project Badger gained momentum. With Maltby’s surreal spoken word stories interweaving with Soden’s stripped back lo-fi beats, their music is equal parts thoughtful and chaotic, playful and serious, and Deepminded is a fine example of their modus operandi. Melding noisy bass guitar with Day-Glo rave strings and a strange, ambitious lyric, it’s a typically idiosyncratic piece of work.

“Deepminded compares the Viking era to our own contemporary one. Their focus was that of survival whereas, in England, ours isn’t and it’s something we often take for granted. Mix that with various excesses and we find ourselves in a collective crisis or existential dread we’re unable or unwilling to communicate.” Explains Simeon. “The song isn’t meant to be vitriolic or a piece of social commentary, it’s simply my own musings of two separate times in history and how different they are.”
