What a perfect way to while away a Sunday afternoon, being entertained by the lilting alt. country of Lost Lot, a North East band currently making lots of waves. Down by the Fish Quay in North Shields it is very much a family atmosphere.
Singer Matt has a powerhouse of a voice that’s laden with feeling. The tremulous vocals are at the core of the sound and frequently backed up by two and even four-part harmonies. The lyrics seem to be largely drawn from lived experience and are delivered with a real relish. The lead guitarist adds his jazz sense and sensibility to the Americana, folk and country feel, driven on by the strident rhythm section.
There is music inspired by the USA, about places he has never been, Matt confides. But we come closer to home when he sings about “Standing where the water meets the sand”, and he could easily have this setting in mind. But what could be closer to home still than a celebration of the act of actually building a new home? We Built A House, is a former single with an infectious chorus. “Never rains but it pours,” are the new lyrics, and a signal for the roller shutter to be pulled closed as the “storm raging at sea” has suddenly come on to land with a watery splosh.
A more up tempo finale choruses with, “I would change the weather for you”. This is a band you can really believe in and you just know that Lost Lot will arrange for the Sunday sunshine and smiles to break out pretty soon.
It is Matt’s birthday, and his partner and baby present him with a caterpillar birthday cake on stage. It is such a pleasure to share in the joyful happy returns. What a splendid Sunday.
