Damian Robinson enjoys a varied day of North East musical talent

Showcasing some of the brightest North Eastern musical talent, via a team doing so much to promote and invest in it, Generator Live continues to be a real highlight in the region’s cultural calendar.
It’s neo-soul artist Rivkala who opens this year’s event, herself an alumni of Generator’s First Notes programme. Taking on a mix of soul and jazz, her sound provides a great start to the day, during which the entertainment is spread out across a relax, chilled atmosphere, with bangers provided between each set by DJ Alannah Lamb.
Sarah Johnsone and Cortney Dixon provide back to back sets filled with expertly crafted indie pop; Johnsone’s new song Work Of Fiction and Dixon’s Summer Love both stand out as fine examples of interesting songwriting. Switching the moods across the day, its chaotic electro/guitar noise makers Look Terrified and punky Peevie Wonders who bring guitar edge in strong sets, before headliners Finn Forster and L Devine finish the day.
Forster, whose progress keeps exponentially growing, provides a superb indie set with an enthused smile throughout; particularly on new single Grey Skies, which is well received. L Devine who is still clearly excited from this year’s debut album release, moves like a true pop star on stage, performing a set of dancey electro poppers.
This year’s event proved to be just as engaging, if not more so, than previous years. With huge ambition from Generator, and some great artists, the North East music scene clearly has huge potential.
