Reliably informed

Are you stuck in with that ‘what shall we do this weekend’ conundrum? We’re going to offer you up weekend destinations filled with the best quirky happenings, both in and out of the region. First up, we’ll take you on a little trip around Whitley Bay…

STAGE Playhouse Whitley Bay
The seaside town is more than just arcades, fish and chips and road works (owing to the continued regeneration of the iconic Spanish City Dome). The Playhouse has hosted recent gigs including Rufus Wainwright and Midlake (both as part of Mouth of the Tyne festival) and there’s often a smattering of quality comedy acts on too.

FILM Jam Jar Cinema
The community cinema and fringe performance space is relatively new on the scene. Aiming to improve access to film and the moving image in North Tyneside, they help local people to engage with the arts on all levels. Screenings include mostly major blockbusters, but independent film screenings are occasionally also on the agenda and the space is also available to hire.

ART Northside Tattooz
The original and the best, Northside Tattooz is a North East institution. Begun by artist Low in 1990, the studio has always set out to provide the very best work by some seriously talented local artists. Regular visiting artists get booked up months in advance, and we can personally attest to the quality of manager Hash’s stunning fine-line work.

FOOD Cornerstone Café
A real labour of love, Cornerstone is a family-run business and one that exudes warmth and quality at every turn. Awesome breakfasts are a proper treat, with a lunch menu that has an Italian streak (bruschetta, pasta and platters). A regular book club, craft night, local history events and BYOB are the icing on the (yummy) cake.

SOMETHING TO DO Pulp Fiction Future Food
Head to clean eating café and juice bar Pulp Fiction Future Food on Park View for regular music and spoken word open mic nights, and some more very good eats.
