ALBUM REVIEW: Dog Years – MEGAFAUNA

Landing somewhere between the harder edges of glammy-poppy-indie-rock Supergrass/Suede and the smacked out dirty sleaze of BRMC, the new album from Dog Years is quiet a combination of ideas.

Based around loud, edgy guitar lines, MEGAFAUNA sees the band play nicely with how and where to take classic blues rock ideas – mostly by turning the effects up to 10 and fading in and out of pop melodies.

Recorded with support from local stoner rock act Dunes, MEGAFAUNA remains ‘rock’ solid at its core, supported by boundaries of experimentation, nowhere perhaps more so than Kind of Vipers which mixes guitar god rock textures of Velvet Revolver, with hardcore/punk energy of the Wildhearts and choppy guitar moments of Television. A short (40 minute-ish) collection of noises, melodies and guitars sees MEGAFAUNA stand out as a fine album – with recent singles A Different Animal and Play Nice standing out with fresh ideas and originality.

The band play the Cumberland Arms, Newcastle on Saturday 14th March.
