Chloe Glover enjoys a woozy and emphatic show from the Brighton dream pop trio

Brighton natives Our Girl started making waves in 2018 when their debut album, Stranger Today, broke onto the scene. Fast forward six years and one Covid-19 hiatus later, the grungy dream pop trio comprising Soph Nathan (also of The Big Moon), bassist Josh Tyler and drummer Lauren Wilson are back with a UK tour to promote their second album, The Good Kind. North East local Nadedja is first on the bill, melding smooth, delicate vocals with bouncy alt. pop beats, jazzy and electronic interludes at the edges.
They may not be one for small talk but Our Girl know how to immerse a crowd. Like they are keen to claw back stage time lost in the intervening years between both albums, there’s an intensity and drive to this show. It builds through the set, which combines the new release with standouts from arguably more ruggedly distorted The Good Kind, their reverb-heavy and echoey guitars threaded with Soph’s ethereal yet powerful vocals. Played live, the new tracks adopt this heavier sound, the guitar and bass notes scissoring and, with emphatic pauses, creating a rawer, expansive soundscape perfect to get lost in, with added rhythmic basslines such as on standout track, Relief. The gentle harmonies created between Soph and Josh throughout the performance are this reviewer’s highlight, adding another layer of wooziness to their dreamy set.
