Tracy Hyman enjoys a night of lo-fi indie punk and garage psych pop

In what feels like ten minutes, The Bug Club are back. Another year and another album, but The Bug Club just keep getting better and are an absolute must see live. Their energy and fast paced lo-fi indie punk hook you in. Indeed, it had a sold out The Cluny dancing away and singing along.
British Birds are in support, aptly named given The Bug Club’s 2023 album Rare Birds: Hour of Song. Their garage psych pop is full of melodic lines of synth and catchy riffs. That Monster is a highlight where “the ladies take over” on lead vocals. Wonderful pure harmonies, rhythms and in the chorus a synth riff to die for over distorted guitars and crashing drums.
The Bug Club are joined by their producer and drummer Tom, and if he looks a little familiar that’s because he is also the singer of Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard. He joins Tilly and Sam as the three-piece power through twenty quirky, punky songs from new album On The Intricate Inner Workings Of The System, interspersed with older hits like Short And Round. Sam’s extended guitar solos come to the fore. Fine furnishings, leather shoes, Quality Pints and looking A Bit Like James Bond – the topics are unusual and varied, which just adds to the charm. I can’t wait to see what The Bug Club come up with next.
