A charity event raising money for Ovarian Cancer Action is being held in tribute to Low musician Mimi Parker
The death of Mimi Parker on November 5th 2022 – just a fortnight before her band Low were due to play Newcastle Boiler Shop – was, for many of us, the most painful loss to music of recent years. Across three decades and a stunning, flawless run of albums that began with the invention of what got called ‘slowcore’ and ended with some of the most astonishing music of her career with albums like Double Negative and Hey What, Parker was loved almost as much for her quiet, calm kindness as for her absolutely remarkable voice, an instrument that could reduce grown men and women to floods of tears for its sheer, pure beauty.
To commemorate the second anniversary of Parker’s passing, some of the finest artists in Newcastle are coming together in her memory and to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Action. The gig is being held at the Star & Shadow on Sunday 3rd November and the line-up currently includes Nev Clay, The Last Path, Espaniel, Daughters Of The American Revolution, Amateur Trepanning, James Grey and Lucy Valentine. There are also plans to show a Low-related movie showing in the afternoon. Tickets are just £10 (concessions are available), with all the money going to the charity. It promises to be a very special night.
