Exciting from the first minute, beautifully crafted and expertly performed, the award-winning 1927 company delivered a fantastical night of escapism at Newcastle’s Northern Stage.
Combining handcrafted animation and beautiful projections, Please right back plunges the audience into a delightful world of make believe, a magical and mischievous world, inspired by the writer-director’s own childhood.
Separated from his children, Mr E finds letters to be his only form of communication. Imagination runs wild as Kim and Davey are kept abreast of their fathers’ travels through the belly of a whale, a chat with a lion and battle with ‘the big man’ amongst others. All of this hides a deep reveal that the children must come to learn. The work of the four actors in the play is exquisite, the blocking and timings were perfect, and the insane number of costume changes make this a play where special credit must go to those working behind the scenes.
Adult in message, and fairly childlike in delivery, Please right back reaches to the child in all of us. Get out of your own head and see it.
