Reliably informed

Twin sister alt-pop duo Talk Like Tigers are doing alright at the moment. They’ve recently performed at Glastonbury and released their second single, Move, to rave reviews and now they are bringing their bold, yet beautiful sounds to Teesside to perform at Twisterella on Saturday 12th October… Not before, letting us know their Six Of The Best.

As songwriters and performers, we go to as many gigs, exhibitions and cultural events as we can. We love art and fashion and recently Stephanie went to the Mary Quant exhibition at the V&A in London. We have also been to the David Bowie exhibition which was inspiring. We feel that fashion is an extension of our creativity.

We saw Abandoman perform at The Stand in Newcastle last year and also at the Edinburgh Fringe and both shows were brilliant! We then just HAD to go and see him at Standon Calling where we were performing with Elvana. Each show he does is completely different because he asks the audience questions and then freestyles and makes up rap songs using their answers on the spot. He uses a cool necklace to trigger sounds from Ableton live. His vocab is off the scale and he is a lovely person too!

Books and Poetry
We have both been reading This Must Be The Place recently. This book is very well written and the language is so beautiful; the descriptions really make you see the different characters and situations. Maggie O’Farrell explores relationships which inspired us to write a song about one of the main characters. This song is currently unreleased and we may release it in the future!

We also love reading poetry! As songwriters, it’s great to look into the minds of poets, the images they create and the rhymes and rhythms they use within their writing. One of our current favourite poetry books is Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur.

The Handmaid’s Tale series (and book) is epic to us. It’s beautifully shot, cinematic and well thought out. It could actually happen and it’s really scary.

We loved the Beyonce documentary, Homecoming! What can we say? She is a queen! She knows what she wants and she makes it happen. It was brilliant to see all of her ideas come to life and also to be made more aware of the huge team she collaborates with.

Travelling and opening up our minds!
We love going to exotic beautiful places to get inspiration… but how many times a year can a musician afford to do that?! Not enough people, not enough! However, when we get the opportunity to travel with our music and as session musicians, we make the most of each place we go to. We check out the venue, explore the city as much as time allows and (if possible) watch other bands. We speak to as many people as we can at each venue and try to soak up the atmosphere. Inspiration can strike at any second and you never know who you are going to meet!
