The large-scale cultural project at Great North Museum: Hancock, taking place until 29th July, exposes the problematic legacy of European colonisation found in museums and heritage sites

Curated by D6 Culture In Transit, Contested Desires: Constructive Dialogues at Great North Museum: Hancock, Newcastle brings together artists from Chile, Ghana, Cyprus, Italy and the UK to explore colonial legacies through art and conversation. The programme interrogates themes of power, memory, and identity, asking which voices are heard in museum spaces and who gets to tell our shared histories.
The exhibition, which runs until 29th July, showcases work developed through international residencies and invites audiences to engage with the complex colonial roots of contemporary injustices. With artists including Rafael Guendelman Hales, Elisabeth Efua Sutherland, Andreas Mallouris and Paul Nataraj, Contested Desires connects global perspectives with local contexts across Newcastle and South Tyneside.
Through dialogue and creative expression, the initiative fosters reflection on heritage and the future. A one-day conference at The Word in South Shields on Thursday 17th July deepens the conversation with curators, artists and community voices.
