Isabel Johnson looks ahead to the 13th Books On Tyne festival at Newcastle Libraries and the Lit & Phil, taking place 22nd-29th November
Calling all Geordie bookworms – Books on Tyne is back for the 13th year, and it’s shaping up to be a week to remember. From Saturday 22nd to Saturday 29th November, a myriad of bookish talks, workshops and signings will be heading to two of Newcastle’s favourite libraries – the Lit & Phil and City Library.
Literary lovers can sink their teeth into a vast range of topics – whether you love a good memoir, want to improve your own writing skills, or are passionate about sports, history, music, or even stones, there’s something for you. Book festivals sometimes get a rep for stale programming straight out of a secondary school literature programme, but you really don’t need to worry about that here. The programming is deliciously unpredictable – take Friday 28th, for example; at 2pm you can hear Guardian football journalist Jonathan Wilson and Professor Brian Ward chat about the history of the World Cup, and then a mere five hours later you can witness a poignant music and poetry fusion performance from poet Kate Fox and esteemed folk duo Staithe.
That’s just one day – but Books on Tyne is a whole week chock full of bookish bonanzas with costs ranging from nothing to £7. Enjoy doubling your brain size!
