Shappi Khorsandi is fresh out of the I’m A Celebrity…jungle; she’s endured snakes, spiders and Boris Johnson’s dad, and now she’s off to Stockton to perform at ARC on Saturday 17th February. I’ve already established that she must be slightly mad, but more importantly she’s very, very funny.

The continuation of her Mistress And Misfit tour will see Shappi back doing what she does best. “It’s my natural habitat,” she says, “I know what I’m doing when I’m in front of an audience.” Unfortunately the concept of making a living from comedy escaped one of her jungle campmates. “Amir Khan asked me why I don’t crack jokes all the time. I said the same reason that you’re not knocking anyone out!”

Shappi’s show may not be standard stand-up comedy fare – Mistress And Misfit tells the story of Lady Emma Hamilton, Horatio Nelson’s mistress – but the themes are universal. “You can make whatever you want funny. So many of the themes – sex, celebrity, passion – are what we talk about in the world today. I’m a stand-up; I need to make you howl with laughter otherwise I go back to the dressing room and chew the furniture.”

Drawing parallels between Emma and her own hardships make for a sensitive, intelligent and witty show, peppered with social commentary without labouring on the usual culprits of Brexit or Trump, and it’s an absolute must see.
