Full Circle is a very special upcoming exhibition by ‘bedroom artist’ Ron Lapworth, taking place in Peterlee this month. During one of Peterlee’s exciting Placelab artist development project exhibitions based in Sunny Blunts, Ron met fellow artist David Kenny. Ron jokingly mentioned that he was an artist himself and shared some pictures of his art on his phone. The art is stunning – capturing fantastic pointilitst landscapes, ink drawings and beautiful minimal pieces, from Ron’s travels around the world all the way back to Peterlee’s own Apollo Pavilion. As a working class Northerner, Ron’s narrative is one that will be echoed by many; he studied art at school but then had to give it up for work, support his family and make ends meet. Moved by Ron’s story and this small chance encounter, Kenny has helped Ron to set up his very first exhibition!

This story is so heartwarming and exciting – it makes me feel really hopeful about the small magical moments that we can experience in everyday life, which can lead to some pretty beautiful happenings. Especially in towns like Peterlee which are so often overlooked and forgotten when it comes to the arts, it’s pretty magical to hear of folks who are making things happen themselves – no their matter age, background or life circumstances – art and creativity can always find a way back to you.

Ron’s inspirational exhibition celebrates a lifetime of painting, “from Peterlee, around the world and back again” and is not to be missed. Check it out from Friday 12th-Thursday 18th July at Unit 19 – 21 Castle Dene Shopping Centre, with a special preview open to all on Thursday 11th July, 5-7pm
