Everyman Cinema is Newcastle’s newest boutique cinema on Grey Street, Newcastle and officially opened last week with a preview of the Elton John film, Rocketman. To mark the launch and to raise money for the Elton John Aids Foundation, Everyman has teamed up with graphic artist and video director Jimmy Turrell, and designer and craftsman Ashley Willerton, who have each created bespoke works that reimagine poster artwork for the movie.
Thursday 6th June’s screening of Rocketman opens with an in conversation with Jimmy Turrell, who has worked for the likes of Capitol Records, Nike, The V&A and The Guardian and who combines handmade collage, drawing, painting, and screenprinting.
About his artwork Jimmy said: “I wanted to go with something a little more abstract and try and marry the pure madcap energy of Elton’s performances and lifestyle at that time in with the concept of an exploding star in space. A pure force of nature that eventually collapses under its own weight but still created something really beautiful in the process.”
Ashley Willerton is a multi-disciplined designer and craftsman with a focus on hand lettering, traditional sign writing and reverse glass gilding. He created his piece live at Everyman Newcastle’s launch and was inspired by, “the old film show cards in the 50’s.”
A limited run of forty A3 prints of Jimmy’s Rocketman piece are available at this event, at £25, with all proceeds going to the Elton John Aids Foundation. Ashley’s piece, which was created live at the launch event, is available via silent auction, and all bids can be sent to Both artworks can be seen at Everyman, Newcastle until 16th June.

Anna Coates, Venue Manager at Everyman Newcastle adds: “We’re delighted to be launching Everyman Newcastle with this incredibly creative Rocketman project, raising money for the Elton John Aids Foundation. Jimmy and Ashley’s pieces are world class and we’re honoured to be working with them and displaying their work in the new venue.”
