Far from the mass-produced ‘pile it high, flog it cheap’ high street brands of Northumberland Street, there resides a vibrant and diverse mix of independent fashion businesses who are intent on pioneering ethical values within their community. To mark the international Fashion Revolution Week, these creatives will throw open their doors for the inaugural Northern Sustainable Fashion Revolution from Wednesday 24th-Sunday 28th April, and combine ethics, craftsmanship, education and sustainability in a series of panel discussions, industry talks, workshops, live fashion displays and much more aimed at raising awareness of fashion practices and the consumer’s role in ‘fast fashion’, while also looking at the technological advances being sought to provide the fashion industry with sustainable and ethical solutions.

“Northern Sustainable Fashion Revolution is the first of its kind in Newcastle, and is providing a platform for pioneering local fashion brands, influencers and academics in the field of sustainable and ethical fashion.” Explains artist Melanie Kyles, who organises the event alongside ethical clothing brand Uncaptive.

Taking place at Ampersand Inventions (Wednesday-Friday) and B&D Studios (Saturday) in Commercial Union House, and bar and restaurant Beeronomy (Sunday), the festival is a must for any socially conscious fashionista.
