Palestine: that’s a barrel of laughs, isn’t it? Well, okay, maybe not. Yet comedian, broadcaster, writer and Guinness World Record holder Mark Thomas wasn’t deterred when he and his team set out to run a comedy club for two nights in the Palestinian city of Jenin. On the other hand, he has worked to expose the very shady world of arms dealers. Unfortunately, he found out that it’s not so easy to celebrate freedom of speech in a place that doesn’t have an awful lot of freedom to spare.

Did that put Mark off though? Of course not! He’s now back in the UK to tell his captivating story at Durham’s Gala Theatre on Saturday 31st March. Joined by Faisal Abu Alhayjaa and Alaa Shehada – two actors and aspiring comics from the Jenin Freedom Theatre – Showtime From The Frontline is all about having the courage to be yourself within a place that seems determined to stamp on your liberties, touching on Israeli incursions, religion and dodging bullets (both metaphorical and literal) as he goes. Directed by Joe Douglas, who also worked with Mark on last year’s The Red Shed, a topical tale about the miner’s strike, it’s set to be a fascinating first-hand account of a brave endeavour.
