Fans of left-leaning musical satirical comedy rejoice, Jonny & The Baptists return to the North East on Friday 27th April with the a new(ish) show at Arts Centre Washington. The World Is A Mess, Here Are Some Songs is the duo’s latest attempt at putting a positive and hopefully humourous spin on current affairs.

You’d think that, with the ridiculously fast turnover rate for equally ridiculous news stories, the likes of Jonny & The Baptists would be rolling in material for new tunes. But if anything, the market is saturated in stuff for comedians to parody. Maybe these Edinburgh Fringe veterans have decided on this short spurt of dates across the UK to try and get the hang of the ever-changing world. Jonny & The Baptists are fairly successful at coming up with anything from jaunty, acoustic, folk-esque ditties, to punchy faux-hip-hop songs. ‘Hits’ like UKIP and Only The Queen will satisfy the politically inclined seeking to find something to laugh at in these desolate times, while the pretty lewd Do It In The Library might fair better for those just wanting a laugh, so long as you’re okay with shock tactics.

Their show is perfect for anyone overwhelmed with the influx of bad news over the past twelve months; a night of escapism might be just the cleansing experience you need.
