Absolute powerhouse and regular co-host of The Guilty Feminist podcast, Jessica Fostekew is bringing her exceptional stand-up show, Hench, to Stockton’s ARC on Thursday 19th and Gala Theatre, Durham on Friday 20th March (and returning to Newcastle’s Stand on Sunday 17th May). Hench was nominated for a Best Show award at the Edinburgh Fringe festival in 2019 and challenges our perceptions of femininity and masculinity.
After an incident at her local gym where Fostekew was referred to as ‘hench’, she decided to do what she does best and create a beautiful and hilarious slice of stand-up. Have you ever seen a feminist attempt to take the word ‘hench’ as a compliment? It’s like watching a snake eat, but funny! Jessica discusses everything from her three-year-old sexist son to her Nordic walking mother, whose unofficial motto is “grace and composure”.
Jess uses her unique brand of wit to discuss and challenge the language we use, rallying against the diet industry and celebrating being strong in a multitude of ways, Hench looks at the impact gender stereotyping can have on our perceptions of ourselves and others.
