The psychedelic space-rock duo, who release their EP Weight Of The Crush, tell us what inspires their sound
Newcastle’s “psychedelic electro space rock” duo The Between Space release their brand new EP, Weight Of The Crush. This spacious sounding three-track offering comes complete with electronic grooves, evocative instrumentation and dark, rich vocals with notes of New Order, The Verve and Ozric Tentacles.
Here, the pair (who have recently announced a show at The Cumberland Arms on Saturday 11th February) tell us what inspires their sound…
We both have a huge range of influences from early psyche & classic period Pink Floyd, Berlin Bowie (and we’re obsessive Rush devotees) through to Gong, early Marillion, Flaming Lips, The Egg and more contemporary psyche from King Gizzard, Osees, Julie’s Haircut, Goat, Hooveriii and the local sounds of Parastatic. So our music has a space psyche & prog heart to it overlaid with some of the seminal electronic powerhouses such as Leftfield, Chemical Brothers & The Orb.
Our debut album (Distant Obscura) and follow-up double EP (Pandemic Separation Sessions Vol 1 & 2) touched on all of these influences but we have taken a more experimental direction on our new EP, The Weight of the Crush with some other influential artists coming to the fore. @Rorcus is a huge film buff and helped build a richly layered film score sound (think Morricone, Vangelis & Zimmer) around the shoe gaze and powerful beauty of Ride (+ spin off solo Andy Bell & Glok) and Mogwai. Throw in the narrative styling of Arab Strap, a Massive Attack groove and some rich Jon Hopkins and classic Tangerine Dream tones and we get to The Weight of the Crush, released on 30th November. Make sure you check out all our videos on YouTube that highlight Rorcus’s visual arts prowess too.
We’re not standing still and have already got 6 or 7 songs demoed and in development for our next release which will probably take us on another mystery tour of influences from Snapped Ankles, Kosmischer Laufer, Squid & Working Men’s Clubs and we’re particularly loving Orielles evolving sound. We should also shout out some of the local bands who we’ve seen, played with and been inspired by, such as Squarms, Milk Lizards, Badger & Ako, Screaming Seagulls, Emergency Librarian 2, Amplified Man & Spelk.
