Newcastle-via-Hackney rapper Reali-T has been turning heads with his tongue-in-cheek wordplay and fresh take on hip-hop. His new track, an Afrobeat-inspired tune which features local R&B artist Jamilah, is out now. Here, he explains what influenced the track and his outlook on music…

“’With every problem there is always a solution’, that’s a quote from my dad that I’ve now forced myself to live by. I wrote this song after the release of a 12 track album that I put my heart, soul, time and money into. I honestly felt like it did not receive the level of recognition that I thought it should have, at the time.

There are many factors for this, most of them my fault, I guess. However, at that point it led to a lot of self-doubt, beating myself up and resentment. You know, the usual struggling artist cliches.

Not to mention that I was and am still kind of going through a personal trauma.

Along the line, after everything settled in my mind and the smoke cleared, I realised I needed to take a different approach. Not just in music but in my life as a whole.

There’s this chorus from Monty Python that I used to hear time and time again when I was a child. “Always look on the bright side of life”. This indirectly inspired Can’t Explain It. I think it speaks for itself really.

Even during our darkest times there’s always something to be grateful for. You may not realise it because you are too focused on the negatives but the proverbial light at the end of tunnel is definitely there.”
