This track feels very close to the emotional core of Narcissist. It builds in a way that feels so satisfying — repeating phrases, circling the same idea until it becomes overwhelming. That use of repetition is something I’m really drawn to, and it reminds me a lot of bands like Hot Chip, where a simple line can take on a completely different weight the longer it sits. Lyrically it hits a similar theme too — “you’re so conceited” is that realisation that someone is so wrapped up in themselves they barely see you at all. That idea definitely fed into the writing of Narcissist.

Say It Ain’t So – Weezer

A classic track, but there’s something about the contrast that always stayed with me — those quieter, almost restrained verses opening out into these huge, chugging choruses. That dynamic shaped a lot of Narcissist, especially in the guitar which is a new direction for me. It reminds me of a lot of Pixies music too — that extremeness in the writing, where it flips between soft and explosive without warning. I wanted that same sense of release, where everything suddenly hits harder. There’s also a kind of detached cool in the vocal delivery that I’ve always loved — it feels effortless, slightly disinterested, but still completely cutting.

You Oughta Know – Alanis Morissette

I grew up listening to Jagged Little Pill, and this track in particular has always felt like a benchmark for emotional honesty and feminine rage. It doesn’t hold anything back — it’s raw, specific, and unapologetically angry. There’s a kind of release in that — saying exactly what you mean, even when it’s uncomfortable. I’ve always loved the line “every time I scratch my nails down someone else’s back I hope you feel it”, it captures that breakup bitterness so vividly. Narcissist taps into that same instinct, just through a modern, alt-pop lens.
