ART & LIT REVIEW: Space by Luxmuralis @ Durham Cathedral (09.10.24)

There is something immersive and emotionally affecting about intense colour, whether it’s watching a gorgeous pink sunset or trying to spot the Northern Lights, and Space by Luxmuralis falls under this umbrella as an experience.

Durham Cathedral is experienced in hosting these events now, as this is the artist collective Luxmuralis’ third time presenting here, and there is no doubt that the amazing building with its stunning architecture is a massive part of the experience.

You enter the cathedral into darkness before walking into areas of light projection, immersive sound and film. The colours and textures were stunning, particularly a celestial projection with a galaxy of stars (onto a decorative clock which made it feel very magical) and the large corridor projection which takes you on a journey via a rocket launch, past Earth seen from space and on into a spectacular series of imagery.

The visuals were created by Peter Walker, Artistic Director of Luxmuralis, and the light show has been touring various cathedrals across the UK for several years now, but was first presented at Durham. We saw stars, galaxies, meteors and rocks floating in space, all accompanied by an uplifting and atmospheric original music score by David Harper. There are lots of opportunities to take photos, although they don’t do justice to what you can see, so my advice is to do what I did, find yourself a spot to perch and  allow yourself to be immersed in the experience – give yourself a chance to get goose-bumps.

It’s worth reading the info on the website before you go, as although I know the building well, it was a bit tricky to navigate – and there are new sections for this year, including some projections in the Cloisters which you won’t want to miss. The evening we went the weather was awful, which lent a nice misty feel to the Cloisters, but do be aware that you have to wait outside until your time slot to enter, so come prepared and wrapped up. Under 3’s are free, child tickets are £5 and there are discounted ticket prices for those with limited mobility or wheelchair users (as they are unable to access a small area of the experience due to steps). There are still tickets available for later times on Saturday and Sunday, if you want to check it out, and be transported into Space.
