Michaela Hall discovers catchy attitude-filled tracks from the Sunderland trio

Freshly formed ahead of 2026 and ready to be heard, three-piece Sunderland punk band Ugly Criers are releasing their debut album Catching Spiders later this month. What they lack in time together as a band though, they more than make up for with their own experiences fused together. This is very clear from this powerful and real debut where they seem to fit effortlessly together in a way some bands of years together may not even manage.
The album has 10 tracks, all have the gold thread of real life running through them and give us a window into their worlds, they explore being a parent, relationship challenges and the things we deal with in our own heads. They’re all full of attitude and energy and most importantly, they’re relatable.
From the opening Kick Down the Ladder, the tenacious and deep rhythms drag us in, we know that what is to come is going to be raw, fast-paced and memorable. Uniquely intriguing strong vocals meet powerful and pure soundscapes made with only drum bass and guitar to create beautifully catchy tracks such as What Have You Done and Can I Have A Hug that you will want on repeat.
This runs through and the whole album has a definite budding signature style – one I suspect we will hear a lot more about following this debut and a lot of new fans.
