For decades now, ever since the Go-Betweens days, Robert Forster has been singing variations of the same story. He’s penned hundreds of songs in the hope of writing one perfect, definitive song. It hasn’t happened yet. Forster keeps singing. He has a compulsion to lay his heart bare. He sings about ill-fated lovers, briefly reunited before being parted again.

He sings about adolescent dreams that won’t fade. About train stations, sleepy suburban towns, and whole lives spent hoping in the dark. He’s nearly 70 yet his voice doesn’t age. He uses the same instruments – mostly guitar and piano – the same chords over and over. He has become haunted by his own music. Yet he is free, at his most alive in the company of ghosts.
