Eschewing the stripped-back Appalachia a cappella of her day job as one third of Mountain Man, Molly Sarlé‘s debut solo record swaps the maple syrup sweetness of Vermont for the hazy pop of Los Angeles. Yes, the harmonies remain and it’s still very, very intimate but, while Almost Free retains the folkiness, it’s on tracks such as Human that the differences can be heard.

Juxtaposing the stupor of dive bars, sweat and whiskey with the freshness of waves, coastal drives and sunsets, Karaoke Angel gives a contemplative, languorous take on existence that you might not have been looking for but, now it’s been found, is something you probably won’t want to live without.
