This is a much more delicate album than you might have come to expect from Jason Isbell of late, his work with his band the 400 Unit being much more bombastic. Instead, Foxes In The Snow is packed with luscious solo acoustic tracks, laced with a running theme of heartbreak and loss. Isbell’s voice is laid bare against beautiful stripped-back guitar, with tracks such as Eileen and Don’t Be Tough really standing out.
There are bursts of a more upbeat feel, Crimson And Clay being the perfect example, but the subject matter remains a dour affair, and the record retains a palpable sense of pain and anxiety. This is a truly excellent record, easily some of Jason Isbell’s finest work.
