An accomplished debut, At Home In My Mind is an introspective reflection of Ellur’s life over the last 25 years. Honest and bleak at times, there are narratives of relationships, betrayal, masking just to seem ok, and things she wishes she “could have said when she was younger”. It’s a study in an exploration of the complicated feelings we have growing up, processing the world.
From the first track, God Help Me Now, we are catapulted straight into swirl of emotions and thoughts about the world, both close to home and further away. The upbeat pop is in contrast to the serious subject matter, or maybe it’s part of coping with it, the resounding chorus a cry for help. The music dips in and out of influences, from indie pop to alt. folk. All the while, Ellur’s rich vocals carry the lyrics; refrains like “Tell me how to feel, tell me how to heal” hooking their way into your consciousness. Highlight tracks include the slow and reflective The World Is Not An Oyster, and the more upbeat Yellow Light.
Music is healing and powerful, and this album is a cathartic listen for both writer and listener. As for Ellur, this is just the start of her musical journey, with a whole lot more still to come.
