After previously writing lyrics alongside the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Air and Beck, Rest is the first album where Charlotte Gainsbourg has written the lyrics on her own.

The eleven sprawling electro pop numbers are befitting of their title, languid and easy-going. Gainsbourg’s album (her first studio release since 2010) feels like the soundtrack to a road movie set in the middle of the night.

Gainsbourg whispers above electro pop, which moves between sounding cinematic and synth-heavy, to the sort of thing you’d want to hear on the dance floor in a chic daydream where you’re wearing sequins and drinking champagne and can probably speak fluent French. (What is she singing? Who knows. It’s so snappy I largely don’t care!)
