It’s been eight years since Cave In‘s last studio effort and Final Transmission serves as a timely and considered elegy to their bass player Caleb Scofield. Frequently sombre and considered, not least with the haunting opening track; a strummed acoustic demo sent by Scofield to the rest of the band a month before his passing, Final Transmission feels like the logical follow-up to their space rock opus Jupiter released nearly 20 years ago.

Emotionally charged lyrics clash with overwhelming controlled aggression, with Shake My Blood a prime example of a band coming to terms with their loss. Closer Led To The Wolves celebrates a musician taken in his prime by putting him to the fore, with an audacious bass-led coordinated cacophony that wrings every inch of pathos from the material.
