Newcastle-based neo-soul vocalist, songwriter and bandleader Rivkala is something of an enigma, however her track Chess, while initially entrenched in a metaphor so tactically complex, is actually a simple call-to-arms to those also navigating their local nightlife for the first time. “Chess was one of the fastest and most fun songs I’ve ever written,” Rivkala says. “I’ve had the misfortune of multiple encounters with a sleazy man on the prowl. Well now I get to use the idea of him as a vessel to make myself laugh, and hopefully other people too, whilst calling him out on his questionable behaviour.”
