Paul Broadhead enjoys a night brimming with local talent

It’s a brave move to open with Bruce Springsteen’s No Surrender, but Hannah Brown possesses a rare, soulful voice and guitar playing ability that belies her young age. Damien Rice’s Older Chests brings a tear to the eye and a slide guitar re-interpretation of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition is impressive. An original composition, Overlooking Suburbia, sits alongside the classics so hopefully we can expect to hear more in the future.
Kimber/Paul’s set is fraught with technical issues but the instrumental duo impress with their interpretations of traditional folk tunes as well as original compositions.
Jenny Lascelles is a talented singer/pianist with tunes and talent in abundance. Opener If You Were A Boat is the kind of love song that people dream of being written about them someday, whilst The Mermaid sounds like a magical fairy-tale, resplendent with Jenny’s lilting vocals. New song Original Sin wouldn’t be out of place on a Tori Amos record, and the confessional Devil’s In Me proves that this is a songwriter capable of digging deep. Jenny invites her backing band and support acts on stage for a raucous finale before a haunting version of Nine Inch Nails’ Hurt rounds off a perfect night of local talent.
