Reliably informed

As one of many female-led shows in the Northern Stage spring season, Sian Armstrong’s delighted to be showcasing her one woman play STUPID on the eve of International Women’s Day. “IWD has felt particularly significant to me in recent years – across the whole world, of course, but also here in the UK and even in the theatre world, where women are still under-represented in directorial roles for example. I’ve worked closely with women theatre-makers in the North East, advocating female voices and championing the work of female artists. IWD this year is all about #Balanceforbetter and despite huge progress in the arts, there’s still a long way to go.”

As a writer, Sian is passionate about telling the stories that need to be heard, with STUPID being the epitome of the ‘not-just-me-then’ tale. We join Stupid on her first day as a supply teacher and witness colourful scenes constructed around classroom antics, an argument at a fun fair, the strain of parents’ expectations (gendered differently for boys and girls) and the pressure to perform in a fun run. This woman is on a mission to piece herself together, one school – and life – lesson at a time, continually striving towards self-acceptance and self-realisation.

Sian doesn’t believe she’s the only woman out there who’s battled with the need to prove herself. This hilariously honest, yet often uncomfortable, story explores the concept of ‘not enough’ which haunts the lives of many women, according to Sian’s own observations. “I spend a lot of time observing people in social situations,” she explains, “and I think many women fight feelings of inadequacy in one way or another. They feel like they don’t have a voice.”

Whilst this play reveals how Stupid’s life fell apart after a break up, the writer never intended for her work to be centred around a man – “God, no! This show is not about a man, but about how one woman works through all the issues in her life and comes through still standing – and even smiling at times!”

Stupid poses the question ‘Will adult life ever make sense?’ Join her at Northern Stage on Thursday 7th March to discover her answer.
